Toots and the Maytals, Buju lead Reggae Grammy nominations

Toots and the Maytals and Buju Banton lead nominations for the Best Reggae Album category of the 63rd Grammy Awards.

The nominations were announced on Tuesday. The nominees are ‘Got to Be Tough’ by Toots and the Maytals; ‘Upside Down 2020’ by Buju Banton; ‘Higher Place’ by Skip Marley; ‘It All Comes Back to Love’ by Maxi Priest; and ‘One World’ by The Wailers.

It’s the fifth Grammy nomination for the Toots and the Maytals, whose legendary lead singer Toots Hibbert passed away on September 11 after contracting COVID-19. The band previously won the Best Reggae Album award in 2005 for ‘True Love’.

‘Got to be Tough’ was the band’s first album in over a decade and was released on August 28.

It’s Buju Banton’s sixth nomination for the award, having won his first Grammy in 2010 for the album ‘Before the Dawn’.

Commenting on his nomination, Banton said: “Let the music speak, I want to be a silent listener. Thanks to all 🙏🏿 A telling album in telling times. #UPSIDEDOWN2020

In the meantime, it’s Maxi Priest’s third nomination for the award, while Bob Marley’s grandson, Skip received a nod for his debut EP. The Wailers, formed by the remaining members of the Bob Marley and the Wailers following the reggae legend’s death, earned their nomination with their first album in over 25 years.

Koffee’s ‘Rapture’ copped the Best Reggae Album Grammy at the 62nd annual Grammy Awards at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles earlier this year.

The 63rd Annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, January 31, 2021.
