There are 30 active COVID-19 cases in the Essequibo Islands/West Demerara region, according to Regional Health Officer (RHO), Dr. Erica Forte.

The region on Friday recorded two new COVID-19 cases, bringing its total to 397 positive cases since March 2020, however, of that amount, there are 359 recoveries, including three on Friday. A total of eight COVID-related deaths were recorded in the region.

Of the active cases, there are 15 persons in home-isolation and two in intensive care; the remainder are in institutional isolation while 29 suspected cases are in home quarantine.

Speaking with the News Room on Thursday evening, the RHO disclosed that over 1,020 persons have tested for the disease in the region to date.

β€œWe have a good response team here…We have amped up our surveillance and asked for more testing to be done,” Dr. Forte said.

To ensure this is achieved, especially durinf the busy holiday period, the region is setting up a stationary testing facility at Parika, East Bank Essequibo.
